Ingredients:
For the Filling:
- 4 medium apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and diced
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour (to thicken)
For the Turnovers:
- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed (or you can use homemade pie dough if you prefer)
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (for sprinkling)
Optional Glaze:
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 1 tablespoon milk
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions:
- Prepare the Apple Filling:
- In a medium saucepan, combine the diced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour.
- Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender and the mixture has thickened (about 10 minutes).
- Remove from heat and let the filling cool slightly.
- Prepare the Puff Pastry:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Roll out the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. If using pie dough, roll it out to about 1/8-inch thickness.
- Cut the pastry into squares or rectangles, about 4 inches by 4 inches.
- Assemble the Turnovers:
- Spoon a heaping tablespoon of apple filling onto the center of each pastry square.
- Fold the pastry over to form a triangle or rectangle, pressing the edges together to seal. Use a fork to crimp the edges for a decorative touch and to ensure they are sealed well.
- Place the turnovers on the prepared baking sheet.
- Add Finishing Touches:
- Brush the tops of the turnovers with the beaten egg to give them a golden color as they bake.
- Sprinkle a little granulated sugar on top for added sweetness and crunch.
- Bake:
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the turnovers are golden brown and puffed up.
- Optional Glaze:
- While the turnovers are baking, prepare the glaze by mixing the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract in a small bowl until smooth.
- Once the turnovers have cooled slightly, drizzle the glaze over the top for a sweet
